From v.1-17, the highlight of the genealogy was given in v.1,
This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
God has promised to Abraham that nations will be blessed by his descendant. This genealogy is about the fulfillment of this promise. Later on, God has also promised to king David that the kingdom of his descendant will be forever. However, the reality was seen in v.17,
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ, fourteen generations
The nation of Israel was destroyed and people was deported to Babylon. The promise was unfulfilled. They did not even have their own country. They were currently under the Roman government and looking forward to their king. see NET notes in v.16, "Christ...(“anointed”), developing (“an anointed one”), then developing still further into a technical generic term (“the anointed one”). In the intertestamental period it developed further into a technical term referring to the hoped-for anointed one, that is, a specific individual..."
Please also note that other than Ruth, there were only 3 other women's name in the genealogy. We know that to have women's name is the genealogy is extraordinary. Those women contributed to the diversity of races (Rachel and Ruth), and that people can see the faithfulness (see Genesis 11 for Tamar's story), and the grace of God (the wife of Uriah committed adultery with David, yet God has forgiven David).
Summary: this Gospel is about the hoped-for-king that God has promised to Israel. This book also noticed the desperation of the people. God was about to bring the salvation to them. Also, God reminded us that women are equally important to Him. Same as people of other nations (gentile), and people who sinned.
From v.18-25, explained why this child was under Joseph's genealogy.
Mary was founded to be pregnant before she got married v.18. How can Joseph believed her and not divorcing her as a unfaithful wife? On one hand, the angel appeared to him. And on the other hand, this is prophesized in the OT. You will see this pattern repeated in Matthew. The fulfillment of the prophesy in the OT is a strong proof to support the claim that Jesus is Christ, the Messiah, the hoped-for-king.
Reflection: God knows us very well. He knows our desperation, disappointment, and He never leaves us. He gives us hope. He will always fulfill what He promised. Do not doubt God's words. They will come to be fulfilled. Jesus has come the 1st time in Matthew 1 as His promise. One day, He will come again as prophesized in other Scriptures. We will see Him one day with the hope of glorification.
