Rom 10:9 你若口里认耶稣为主,心里信神叫他从死里复活,就必得救。 It is one of the famous verse but it needs some explanation. What does "Lord" means in "confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord"? Some believe "Lord" means master because it is the meaning of the Greek word. Therefore, they believe people need to believe Jesus both his savior and Lord (i.e. master) in order to be save.
I believe "Lord" means Jehovah. It is because Jews would not speak God's name directly. So, they accustom to replace Jehovah with Lord. This can be shown in Ro 10. What is the basis for Ro 10:9? Paul quotes Joel 2:32 in Rom 10:13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." If you compare Ro 10:13 with Joel 2:32 到那时候,凡求告耶和华名的就必得救; you see "Lord" in Ro 10:13 does not mean master but Jehovah.

The same verse caught my attention (Ro 10:9-10), and I think of the same doctrinal discussion about Lordship salvation. However, I come to the content for the answer. From chapter 9, Paul explains to the readers that why the Gentiles can be saved and why some of the Israelites are not saved. Israel pursued the righteous by works and not by faith (Ro 9:32). Then in chapter 10, Paul contrast the 2 ways of righteousness. In Ro 10:3, he calls them the righteouness from God and the one from their own. In Ro 10:5-6, he calls them the righteousness by the law and the by faith. Then he defines the meaning of righteousnes by faith in Ro 10:6-8, i.e. the incarnation and the resurrection of Christ. That is the content before Ro 10:9-10. Now, the content after these 2 verses. In Ro 10:12-13, Paul tells us that there is no difference Jews and Gentiles. He refers back to Rome 9:24. Again, the contrast is between work and faith. Nothing in the content will suggest any meaning of Lordship in this passage.
