After Jesus have taught them about acting above the Law He gives them the incentive to do so, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect (5:48)." The different between the hypocrites and the kingdom seeker are the different kinds of rewards ("rewards" or the meaning of this repeats 5 times in ch 6) they are going after. The hypocrites seek the approval of man when they should do those things that they should seek only the approval from God, i.e. giving (v.2-4), praying (v.5-15) and fasting (v.16-18). Why? They may think that God is invisible and His reward are not tangible. However, the reward from man make them feel superior. When I write this blog I should have seek the reward from God only, because this is my devotion thoughts. If I seek the praise of men then I make the same mistake as the hypocrites (Audrey).
The kind of God our Heavenly Father is has a great impact in how we would live our life. Jesus repeatedly tells us, “your Father who sees in secret” (6, 18), “your Father knows what you need” (8, 32). This understanding changes our view about charity, prayer, fasting and our living in this world. I praise God because He cares for me. (Mike)
