Matt 5

When I read Beatitudes again this time, it is like steps from conversion to disciple. Conversion starts with realizing our need (“poor in spirit”), mourn about our sins, meek and humble before God, hunger for righteousness from God and not from ourselves. Once we are “satisfied,” we display God’s characters in our life: mercy, pure, peace and perseverance. All those blessings are given by God and not manufactured by us (Mike).
The crowd following Jesus are not all qualified to enter the kingdom (v.1). Only those spiritual prepared will be (v.3-11). With this change in this heart people can hardly miss that because their behavior will be changed (v.13-16). The law code in that time is the Mosaic Law (v.17-20). However, their behavior will surpassed the Pharisees' and the teachers' because they do it from their repented heart (v.20). Now, Jesus explains the Mosaic Law with the perspective of those with this change (v.21-43). Their thoughts also count (v.22, and 28). Facing their sins, Jesus has couple recommendations. Settle the sins quickly because the kingdom is near (v.25-26). Drastically change yourself to avoid sin (v.29-30). Think about what you have done to others as a consequence of your sins (v.32 "Causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorce woman commits adultery") (Audrey).
