Does one need to forsake everything and then follow Jesus in order to have eternal life? (Matthew 19:21) I don’t think so because Jesus didn’t ask other disciples to do the same thing. So, why is it a requirement for this rich man? The requirement for eternal life is perfect obedience of God’s commandment (“If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” (v17); “If you would be perfect …” (v21)). But this rich man did not realize he is not perfect. So, by asking to sell all his possession, Jesus used the last commandment (Thou shalt not covet (Exo 20:17) ) to show his imperfection.
Salvation is only possible by the work of God (26-27). Men attain perfect obedience not by his own effort but by receive the righteousness from God through Jesus.
