Amos 5
Church music is a controversial topic today. While in Amos time it is also something to talk about (v.23), but it is not the style of music being discussed. The one who sing is the matter. They deprive justice in the courts (v.7,10,12, 15). Bribes is given to cover up. The poor is in great disadvantage (v.11). How dare they sing in the church? What's in their mind. They even long for the Day of the Lord (v.18). Why? Maybe to show that they are innocent even in front of the Lord. Their theology is not crocked. God cannot see what they do. They win the court does not mean they can win under God's eye. They think the Day of the Lord will bring brightness (v.18,20a, 20b), because they think they will gain favor from the Lord. They have the wrong confident before God. God says, "Woe to you...," He despises their religious feasts, and he calls their songs "the noise." This reminds me that I cannot hide away my sin when I come before the Lord. God will not be cheated by the surface job. What is really in our heart exposes before Him. Shall I have confident before the Lord? I shouldn't if I do not have Jesus as my mediator.
