Joseph’s brother got rid of Joseph because Jacob’s favoritism. However, because of their sin, they had been living in their guilt for many year. Listen to what they said when they ran into trouble. Gen 42:21 Then they said to one another, "In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us."
This is how precious a clear conscience in front of God. Only when we have a clear conscience, we would not second guess what had happening to us and can trust God will guide us through. Joseph’s brothers were jealous for Jacob’s love. And they wanted so much they would sin in order to get it. However, even they got rid of Joseph, they did not got what they wanted. Jacob just shifted his love to Benjamin. They paid the price of sin but didn’t get what they wanted.
