Israel spent 430 years in Egypt (Exo 12:40). At least the last eight years were under Egypt oppression. God allowed this to happen not because He was too weak to protect Israel. In fact, the Bible told us that God was always behind the scene to protect Israel. Egypt wanted to eliminate all the males of Israel. God protected Israel through 2 God-fearing midwives. Then, God rescued Moses from the water and also from Pharaoh after his murder.
When we are in the midst of trials, we often ask where God is. God is always in control and has a plan for us even though we cannot see it now.
