Verse 2-3 is an allusion of Jesus’ warning of laying up treasures on earth (Matt 6:19-20). These rich people not only do that, they did it by taking advantage of his employees (vv. 5-6). To those who are suffering, James asks us to be patient (vv. 8-11) and put everything in prayer (vv. 13-20). This teaching links us back to the very first teaching about trials in chapter 1 like a full circle. For a true faith, what better test can we have other than prayer? Let’s exercise us faith through prayer whether we are in sufferings, or in joy; In sickness or in sin.
