James 2:1-13

Why would we should favoritism to the rich, to the successful people, to the popular people or to our friends? Isn’t it because we also want to gain “favor” from them? But James warns us that this is against love. Love basically is a sacrifice that you treat some one for his benefit instead of yours. Let us be merciful like our God.

Notes: James 2:12 is a difficult verse because we “died to the law” (Rom 7:4) but how come we will be “to be judged by the law of liberty” ?

First, both Jesus (John 5:24) and Paul (Rom. 8:1) assured us that Christian believers will never be judged for their sins (i.e. condemnation); but our works will be judged and rewarded (Rom. 14:10–13; 2 Cor. 5:9–10).

Second, the phrase “the law of liberty” in Greek is without the article “the”. That implies James is not referring to the mosaic law but the character of the mosaic law which will be the standard of God’s judgment.
