1 Thess 4

Verses 13-18 is an important teaching about Jesus’ coming. Jesus will come back in two stages: (1) Rapture – literally means “ being caught up.” The church (both the dead in Christ and the living Christians) would be “caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord” (v. 17) and (2) the 2nd Advent – Jesus returns to the earth. Many interpretation confusions are caused by mixing of these two events in the end times.

My sharing: We always want to know God’s will in our life. There are 2 kinds of God’s will: the general and the specific. The general God’s will is clearly written down in the Bible and applies to every one. For example, ‘For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;’ (1Th 4:3). We have no need to search God’s will in this area. All we need to do is to obey. The specific God’s will is personal guidance of God. For example, our marriage, our vocation, our daily decision, etc. However, if we will not follow the general God’s will, why would God let us know His specific will in our life?

Thanks so much for these insights, Mike. I'm really enjoying the class, and enjoying the blog as well. Good point here about God's specific will. If we aren't following the general will, we need to start there before trying to determine specific will.
