The governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd is ridiculous v. 13. Where is justice? Choose a prisoner to release according to the crowd??
Then Pilate choses a most notorious prisoner, Barabbas v.16 as a option. The choice seems obvious. You want a harmless person whose only fault is that the fact that He is known as the king and savior ("Jesus who is called Christ" v.17) or a notorious prisoner? However, the people choose Barabbas because of the envy of the priest and elders v.20. They do not just choose Barabbas, and let Jesus put in the prison. They want to crucify Him!
Pilate himself knows that Jesus is innocent but he does not release Him, but let the people to choose v.18. If he really stands for the justice he should not have let the people to choose, because the priest and elders envy at Jesus. They could have affected the people around them to cast their vote. And this is exactly what happened. Pilate should have just released Jesus if he stands for the justice as a governor.
None of the process, people, religious leaders, politic leaders are just regarding the judgment of Jesus. He dies not because of His sin, but ours.
