Matthew compiles a list of miracles in these two chapters to show Jesus is the promised Messiah. Jesus has power over sickness (8:1-17); over nature (8:23-27); over demons (8:28-34); over death (9:18-26). When people start to realize Jesus may be the Messiah, rejection also starts. The Jews challenge Jesus’ authority of forgiveness (9:1-8); his association with sinners (9:9-13); his anti traditional practical (9:14-17). When they cannot deny Jesus’ work, they deny the source of Jesus’ power (9:33-34).
My Sharing: Seeing is not believing. Our faith is usually tie to our experience or our environment, but this kind of faith is at most a “little faith.” True faith rests on the word of Jesus (8:8) or our knowledge of our God (9:21, 28). May we believe before we see.
