Matt 24-25

There are two events about the coming of the Lord: The first event is the Rapture – Jesus descends from heaven and the church is taken (i.e. rapture) to meeting the Lord in the air. (1 Thess 4:13-18). This is not the event that Matt 24 talks about. The second event is the Second Advent – Jesus returns to the earth. That is also Matt 24-25’s context (Matt 24:30; 25:31). Thus, we have to interpret those parables in the context of 2nd Advent. Jesus explained to them that He will come back unexpectedly (24:36-39). The parable of the wicked servant (24:45-51) illustrates Jesus would come back sooner (24:48). The parable of the ten virgins illustrates Jesus comes back later (25:1-13). So, the point of both parables are watchfulness. These parables are not teaching we can lose our salvation.

Similarly, the parable of sheep and the goats is not teaching salvation by work. This parable is about the judgment right after the 2nd Advent (25:31)and before the Millennial kingdom starts (25:34). What is the criteria for entering into the kingdom? It depends on how they treat “these brothers of mine”. Who are Jesus’ brother? They are either the Jews (because Jesus is a Jew) or the believers (because they are also the children of God). Before the 2nd Advent, there is the Great Tribulation. The whole world will persecute the Jews and the believers (24:9). Doing good to “Jesus’ brothers” is a very danger act. Unless you are a true believer, you won’t risk your own life. So, their faith is demonstrated by their act.

My sharing: It is easy for me to take a lay back role when I am in a transition waiting for God’s next assignment. But we should seize every opportunity to work for God because Jesus may come back tomorrow.

There are 3 questions the disciples asking Jesus: (1) When does the destruction of the temple happen v.2-3? (2) What is the sign of your coming back v.3? (3) What is the sign of the end of the age v.3? When we looked back now, in the history, only the first question is relevant to the disciples. They did not see the #2 and #3 things happen. To us today, we may or may not see #2 and 3. Why do they need those information, and why do we? I think the future always affect the way we live today. The world is not our final destination v.35. Jesus will come back and become the king of the kingdom. We shall concern about His plan and His program.
