The purpose of the Gospel of Matthew is to tell the Israelites that Jesus is the king that promised in the OT. Israelites were expecting the king that comes to rule over them and all the spiritual and physically blessings when the kingdom is established. We call this the Millennium.
When Jesus came to Jerusalem the last time (before He is crucified) He fulfilled the promise in the OT. The King has came. He gave them the sign, that is, He rode on the donkey and the colt (the little donkey) v.1-5.
People respond to this sign and welcome Jesus. "The son of David" is a special name that means Jesus inherited the kingdom of David, to whom God has promised that his kingdom will last forever. They also recognized that Jesus came from the Lord v.6-11.
However, from v.23 to the end of this chapter, Jesus was not welcomed by the leaders of the Israel. They do not welcome Jesus as their king and finally they crucified Him. The kingdom is delayed until the Israelites are ready spiritually. Only the generated can enter the kingdom. When Jesus came again the whole nations of Israelites will welcome because they are all saved (Rom. 11) Right now we do not see many Jews came to Him. What can we do to help them?
