Acts 1-2

When the apostles asked about the restoration of the kingdom to Israel (1:6), it reflected their understanding of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is a literal kingdom on earth and it is closely tied to Israel because of the Old Testament prophesies. Notice that how Jesus answered them. Jesus did not correct their view which implies what the apostles believed was the correct view of the kingdom. However, Jesus told them the time was not for them to know because the kingdom is delayed. In Acts, we will see a new program begins – the Church. In the Gospels, the kingdom is near but in Acts, the focus is switched to the Church.

The list of the 11 disciples has a special meaning to me. Being a disciple means you want to follow someone. Now that person is gone. You can no longer physically follow Him, what can you do? They can pack and go home. However, they chose to gather together and pray. Their name is listed again. They are list before when they are called to be disciples of Jesus. They are still followers of Him. Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem and they still follow Him. They gather and pray. From 1:15-2:47. Their number has jumped from 120 to 3120. This is the beginning of a big ministry. How? By the obedience of these disciples and the work of the Holy Spirit.
