This passage contrast the wrath of God v.1-3 and the grace of God v.4-8. We are now deliver from His wrath because of His grace. His grace is abundant v.4, His grace does not depend on us v.5 (we seat with Him now in heaven v.6!), and His grace covers us continuously v.7.
I like to think in this way, before I was saved I was nobody. I am among one of the slaves of Satan v.2 who act like everybody else. On the other hands, I may have enjoyed this think of life, because the Scriptures say this is "gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature[a] and following its desires and thoughts v.3b." To act like this is also my own desires and thoughts! However, the rest of the verse alarm, "Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath v.3c." If you want to know what does the wrath of God look like read Revelation chapter 5-19. Thank God Christians will not be there!
There is also another contrast in v.8-10. Salvation is instrumented through our faith, not our works. In fact, work is not something that qualifies us for salvation v.9 but something that only when we lives in Christ that we are able to do v.10. I met some non-Christian friends who really want to be good persons. They may to a certain extend be able to do that. However, no one is good enough to be saved from the wrath of God v.9.
