The context of the Scripture is very important, just as what the "daily bread" says today. This is the passage not for all of us! The book of Deuteronomy is about the giving of the Law to Israelites one more time before they enter the Land of Promise. Therefore, God gave them this warning passage so that they will obey His Law v.58-59. All kinds of unthinkable disasters and disease will happen to them v.59-61. Even though God made them prosper before He can also destroy them if they disobey Him v.62-63. Since Christians are not under the Law (Rom. 6:14) we are not under this curse.
What does this passage do to me? Although the law does not apply to me God is the same and I can learn something about God here.
I think God has the power to pursue us when we sin. It seems like He is invisible and far away from us. It seems like He cannot unplug my computer when I browse the wrong kind of website. It seems like He cannot stop my heart from hating someone. When disaster comes, when disease comes man knows we do not exist independently, but there is a higher being above us. God can intervene our lives! Be careful what we do and what we think.
