John 10:1-11
In the time of Jesus, the sheep pan is probably shared by a group of shepherd. Sheep are kept together at night. In the morning, the shepherd will come and call out his sheep and lead them to the pasture to eat and to the river to drink. There is no mistake which sheep will follow which shepherd, because the sheep only follow the voice of its own shepherd (v.4). In the life of these sheep they will find a sense of fullness because the Shepherd loved them to the point that He has scarified His own life for them (v.10-11). We do not need to worry about the wolves that will come to eat the sheep because we have a sacrificing shepherd (v.12). However, Jesus warns us about the thief and robber. The sheep does not belong to them and therefore they cannot come to the door because the gate keeper will not open the door for them (v.1-2). They come to steel, kill and destroy. The sheep will not listen to them. Jesus warns his audience that, if you are the real sheep of God turn your eyes off the Pharisees (ch 9). Their teachings are contrary to Jesus'. If you are the real sheep you should not following them. Sheep is not very smart and thus they need a shepherd, but at least they have good ears and know who to follow. Do we have good ear like the sheep? Do we turn our ears off when we encounter false teachings?
