Jonah 1:1-10
Nineveh on one hand is a wicked city (v.2), on the other hand it is also a enemy of Israel. It is the capital of Assyria, which has threatened the other nations for a period of time. When God send you to share the Gospel to Osama Binaden, what will you think? You want him to repent and receive the salvation? This is a ultimate test of some people who has a strong sense of righteousness. However, do we see God's mercy, which is also one of His character? We allow the righteous God to have mercy on ourselves, but not on others. Or we have forgotten our own needs of mercy when we are saved?
When everyone on the ship knows they are going to die (even the veteran sailors v.5a), they pray to their own gods. They find it unthinkable that Jonah is sleeping v.5b! He closes his eyes and purposely ignores what God is doing to him. He knows that God is the one who creates the land and sea v.9. Of course this storm of the sea is sent by Him because of his escaping from Him v.10. Do we close our eyes and ignore God when we fall in the discipline of God? What makes our hearts so cold to God? Our own desires being more important than His? Our own sense of righteousness?
