Mark 7:5-13
The Pharisees and scribes do not want to give up their "holiness," and being considered as "ungodly" person. They want to have their own traditions but still considered to be godly persons (v.11). They told their parents that the money is given to God! They still want others to say that they are good believers. However, they think their traditions should replace God's commandments. Their words are more important. The Scriptures say "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition (v.9)" and "thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down (v.13)." Do I think God's words are more important than mine? Or the other way round? Do I disobey God but still want other to think I am a good Christian? Do I fear man more than I fear God?
Not only they do this, but they form a tradition for others. Those who follow them are not even allow to support their parents (v.12). And the Scriptures say this is only one of the many examples (v.13). What influences do I have for others? Do I leave behind good examples for other to follow? Or I force other to go with my sinful way?
Side track: To Jesus, those who do not support their paretns financially directly violated God's law about "honoring parents (v.10)." Also let those who escape the responsibility is the same as letting people to escape from the penalty of the law (Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die (v.10)).
