Mt. 13:3-8, 18-23
Background: Mt. 13 is about the parable of the kingdom, which is the future earthyly reign of Christ on earth. When Jesus was rejected in Mt. 11 He does not teach them directly but with parable as a punishment.
About this passsage: v. 2 is an important verse of this passage. The parable is given when many people came to Jesus. However, not all of them will have good "ear" for Him. The same message is given, but have different result in different people. The soil is only a metaphor. I used to think that if the soil is bad then no good result will come. Then it is not fair. However, the relationship of the seed and soil is the main focus. Jesus labors to them all, but at the end only some of them will have good result. We have about 60 people attending our church's service, how many among us will have good result. Jesus defines the good result, the one who is longlasting (contrast with the first three kinds of soil) and reproducing (v.8). Am I a longlasting and reproducing hearer of the Word?
