v.16 is the key verse of this passage: the man want to do some good thing to get eternal life. In other words he wants to be a perfect man (v.21) to exchange the eternal life. Jesus points out that "perfect" is not that easy, he has to sell his possession which he relies on so much (v.23-24) that he is not willing to give up (v. 21-22). The riches of the earth is not the main point of the passage, which is the personal problem of this man. You and I may not have this problem, but if we want to have eternal life with the method of being the perfect man, then we have made the same mistake as this man. In v.25-26, Jesus told us the way to salvation is not out of man, but from God.
I thank God that I do not have to be a perfect man in order to be saved. Jesus is the perfect man that saves me. Therefore, I no longer trust in myself, in my own "perfection." I recognize my imperfection in front of God and I thank Him.
