1 Cor. 1:18-31
Corinth is a church with strife (v.10). With their greek and philosophy background, some of them may argue that they are the most wise among their brothers and sisters. In v.18-25, Paul first denies the kind of wisdom that they have. They are foolishness to God. Then in v.26-31, he points out the reality that they are not even qualify to call "wise" with the world standard. However, God chose them by believing (v.21), and by calling of God(v.24). God chose the weak one so as to shame (some translation says "frustrate") v.27 and to nullify v.28 the strong one, with a purpose "so that no one may boast before him (v.29)." The boasting probably relates to the strife in the church. When we fight we want others to think we are superior. Paul reminds us we do have some superioty, which is Chirst (v.31).
I do want others to see some strength of me, even those which are not exist. Being regard as "wise" or "smart" are good feelings that I easily indulge in. However, the Bible tells me that the worldly wisdom are foolish in God's eyes. Plus, I am not really smart or wise. I only want to have this quality so that I can win the argument against other.
