Amos 6-9
Amos is the prophet during the same time period as Isaiah. During that time the northern kingdom-Israel is facing the capture of Asyrian. However, the king of Israel does not believe the prophet (ch 6). Even the prophet asks for the forgiveness of the judgment twice (7:1-6), she cannot escape from the plum line of God. What is a plum line? It is the device that uses in the building. It is a metaphor for the standard of God. In other words, God has to apply His standard to measure the Israel, and they do not pass (7:7-9). He will not forgive them any more. The sanctury of the northern kingdom was built about 200 years ago and it is used to worhsip the idols. Even the prophet, Amaziah, says it is a santuray of the king (not of God) v.13. The Israelites probably are very happy about the fact that they have a santuray among them. Do they realize they are not worhsipping the true God in their santuray. Do we do the same when we go to church we think we are worshipping God. Do we examine ourselves each Sunday and ask who am I worshipping?
Amaziah questions the authroity of Amos. He despises him and tell himt o go back to Judah to find a living (v.12). Amos says he is called by God (v.15). When the pastor of other brothers and sisters give us advice we do not need to listen to them if the advice is out of themselves. However, if it is out of the Bible (which is out of God), then we should pay attention to what they said.
